why we feel obligated to finish games

A dattebow video essay.

Needed a full shot list before I touched the timeline on this one, more than most videos on the channel. The script argues that finishing games out of obligation comes down to three things I called the Guilt Triad, sunk cost, hype, and just being in the wrong mood for a game, and each one needed its own visual metaphor rather than just a talking head explaining it. Sunk cost became a sinking coin animation. Hype became actual review scores and comments pulled off screen. The mood one became a split screen, someone stuck in a dark dungeon on one side and a bright, inviting game icon on the other.

The actual argument in the script gets pretty blunt, uninstall the game, lower the difficulty, use a guide, nobody’s giving you a grade for finishing something you stopped enjoying. Wanted the pacing to match that bluntness once it got to the “quiet quitting” section, so the cuts get faster and the visuals get more literal right as the advice gets more direct.
